The European or black alder can be grown as a large tree or suckering shrub. It’s very fast growing and is among the best of the nitrogen fixing trees. It prefers moist bottomland soil, but unlike other alder trees the European alder tolerates dry sites well. It is useful as a coppice tree for firewood or pole wood.
