Description

Hybrid hazel: 1-2' bareroot seedling

Hybrid hazelnuts are multi stemmed shrubs that combine the large nut size of the European filbert with the blight tolerance of the the American hazelnut. Along with oaks and chestnuts hybrid hazelnuts are valued for producing a staple crop yield from a woody perennial. Different from chestnuts and oaks that produce a higher starch yield, hazelnuts are loaded with oils. If chestnuts would replace corn, then hazelnuts would replace soybeans. They can be grown as hedge or a windbreak and tolerate many different soil conditions.

American hazel: 1-2' bareroot seedling

American hazels are a native multi stemmed shrub. In contrast with the hybrid hazel, they are a bit more hardy and vigorous but the nut size is generally smaller. Where there can be a somewhat wide range of variabiltiy in seedling hybrid hazels, Americans show a bit more genetic stability in our experience.
